Our Vision
Building a Better Future is a dedicated non-profit organization based in Compton, CA, committed to tackling the pressing issues of homelessness and food insecurity and digital training in our community. Founded on the principles of compassion, dignity, and social justice, our mission is to provide essential resources and support to those in need, fostering a pathway to a stable and self-sufficient future.
Our Message
At Building a Better Future, we believe that everyone deserves access to basic necessities such as food and shelter. Our mission is to feed the homeless and provide interim housing solutions to unhoused individuals, helping them transition to stable, permanent housing. We strive to create a supportive environment where every person is treated with respect and given the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
What We Do
Feeding the Hungry: We operate a comprehensive meal program that delivers nutritious and balanced meals to homeless individuals in Compton. Through our daily meal services, mobile food distributions, and community kitchens, we ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.
Housing the Homeless: Our interim housing program offers temporary shelter and wraparound support services to help individuals and families find and maintain permanent housing. We provide safe, stable housing solutions and work closely with clients to address their unique needs, from job training and employment assistance to mental health and addiction services.
Through a partnership with Grow with Google and Coursera, Urbane Upskill provides participants with full scholarships to earn industry-recognized Google Career Certificates in high-growth fields like:
- Project Management (required first)
- Data Analytics
- Cybersecurity
- Digital Marketing & E-Commerce
- IT Support
- UX Design
Training is delivered online, but students receive hands-on, in-person support at our community facility—including access to internet, laptops, printers, and weekly study groups. Our hybrid learning model blends flexibility with structure to ensure success.
Our Goals
- Increase Meal Distribution: Expand our meal program to serve more homeless individuals, ensuring they receive regular, nutritious meals.
- Expand Housing Solutions: Increase the number of interim housing units and support services available, helping more individuals transition to permanent housing.
- Enhance Community Engagement: Strengthen relationships with community stakeholders, volunteers, and partners to build a robust support network.
- Raise Awareness: Educate the public about homelessness and food insecurity, fostering greater community involvement and advocacy.
Success Indicators
To measure our impact and ensure we are meeting our goals, we focus
on key performance indicators such as:
- Number of Meals Served: Tracking the total number of meals distributed and the number of individuals reached by our meal program.
- Housing Stability: Monitoring the number of individuals placed into housing and the percentage who remain housed over time.
- Volunteer Engagement: Measuring the number of volunteers recruited, trained, and retained, as well as their overall satisfaction and contribution.
- Community Support: Evaluating the level of engagement and support from donors, corporate partners, and local organizations.
- Client Outcomes: Assessing improvements in clients' health, well-being, and self-sufficiency through regular follow-ups and feedback.

At Building a Better Future, we believe everyone deserves a pathway to economic mobility—regardless of their past or current circumstances. The Urbane Upskill Program is our signature workforce development initiative, designed to equip at-risk high school students and justice-involved adults with in-demand technical skills and career credentials.

Who We Serve
High School Program:
We support at-risk juniors and seniors who are not on a traditional college track. Over a 2-year period, students complete their Project Management Certificate, then select a specialized track while developing a professional portfolio to boost employability upon graduation.
Reentry Program:
Justice-involved individuals face unique challenges when reentering the workforce. Urbane Upskill helps bridge that gap with life skills training, a digital literacy bootcamp, and access to the same high-quality certification programs available to youth. The goal: job-ready participants in 6 months or less.
Participation Goals
In Year One, the Urbane Upskill Program will serve:
- 50 high school students
- 30 reentry participants
Each cohort will be closely supported by trained staff, mentors, and program coordinators who monitor progress and provide tutoring, coaching, and encouragement every step of the way.
Our Impact Goals
- 75%+ certificate completion rate
- 70% weekly attendance in support sessions
- 60% of participants employed or continuing education within 6 months of completion
- Lower recidivism rates among reentry clients
- Increased engagement and future planning among youth participants
